Mild and wet, windy next week

Staying unsettled through the week with low pressure in control of conditions. The jetstream will be strengthening next week and this brings the possibility of heavier rain and some very strong winds. Christmas looks set to be a mild one this year and probably wet for some.

Sunday 20/12/15
Low pressure remains in control on Sunday. Heavy rain could continue to affect Southwest England, Western Wales, and Northwest England for a time together with strong winds. More eastern and southern areas will be cloudy with a few spots of rain but mostly dry and very mild. Drier conditions for northern and western Scotland as well as much of Ireland but with a fair amount of cloud and some showers in the west. Temperatures rising to between 9 and 12°C.

Monday 21/12/15
Monday sees low pressure to the northwest and higher pressure to the south. A strong west to southwest airflow covers the country, blowing in periods of rain to western coasts and hills, and a few showers further east. Plenty of cloud for all and mild again at 9 to 13C.


 

Tuesday 22/12/15
A wetter day is likely on Tuesday, and a windier one too. The southwest wind blowing fronts eastwards, these giving rain, some of it heavy at times in the west. Breezy and very mild with highs at 9 to 14C.

 
 
 

Wednesday 23/12/15
Low pressure north of Scotland on Wednesday. A broad westerly flow covering the country giving cloud and rain to the north and west, but drier to the east and south, although even here a few spots of rain are likely. It will be windy with gales in western Scotland. Highs at a cooler 8 to 11C.



Christmas Eve 24/12/15
Low pressure may be over northern Scotland on Christmas Eve. Together with a jetstream overhead this may bring a very windy and unsettled day. There is the threat of heavy rain, although the location of the heaviest rain and strongest wind is still unclear. Highs near 9 top 12C.

Christmas Day 25/12/15
With low pressure in control there is the possibility of a wet Christmas Day, especially over southern and central England. Mild here too. Probably fresher and brighter for Scotland and Ireland with showers here, most in the west. Tops at 9 to 11C.
