Staying warm
Dry next week

Issued: 1000hrs Wednesday 20th February 2019
Duty forecaster: Garry Nicholson

Foggy mornings and slight frosts

A warm southerly airflow and high pressure will prevail through the rest of February, giving the British Isles an extended early taste of spring. A little rain or drizzle is possible in the far west heading into this weekend, but most places will be dry for many days ahead. Temperatures often into the mid-teens Celsius. A touch of frost may occur some nights, and fog patches are likely to form.

Saturday 23/02/19
High pressure centred over Germany and Poland maintains a warm southerly airflow over the British Isles. A weak front moves in from the west, bringing some low cloud and patchy rain for Ireland and later western Scotland. Banks of cloud and drizzle may also drift onto Irish Sea coasts. Early local fog, then dry with lots of sunshine for England and Wales, plus central-eastern Scotland. Breezy in the west and north. Lighter winds southeast. Very mild, 13 to 16C warmer in shelter.

Sunday 24/02/19
High pressure expands across the British Isles, with winds dropping light and variable for all. Remnants of a front may bring cloudy skies across northern areas at first, but this should break up through the day. Any early local drizzle will fade, leaving a dry day overall. A greater risk of widespread fog in the morning, and a chilly start for some. A good deal of sunshine coming through, but local patches of low cloud stubborn to break up. Temperatures topping out at 12 to 15C.

Monday 25/02/19
High pressure remains in charge, centred to the east. Again, early fog may be a hazard in the morning, and slight frost possible in rural areas. Warm sunshine breaking through for many. Cloudier out to the west of Ireland and Scotland where a southerly breeze freshens again. A fresh easterly breeze may also affect English Channel coasts. Light winds for most places inland. Highs 11 to 14C.

Tuesday 26/02/19
Little overall change, with dry, anticyclonic weather prevailing and a southeasterly airflow. Early fog and slight frost possible. Sunshine and fairly light winds. Very mild, feeling warm in the sun, highs 11 to 15C, or locally higher with shelter to the lee (north) of high ground.

Wednesday 27/02/19
Fairly slack high pressure stays in charge. Dry overall, with variable cloud and a good amount of sun. Light south to southeasterly winds. Highs 11 to 15C.

Thursday 28/02/19
February's weather is expected to end on a quiet note, with high pressure staying in place. Generally dry with early fog, then a good deal of sun. Highs 11 to 15C.
