Drier days next week?
Mostly mixed

Issued: 0900 Friday 28th July 2017
Duty forecaster: Simon Keeling

Hints of a drier day or two for the east next week, but staying mixed overall

Before you get too excited by the headline, drier weather is likely only to last for two or three days next week, and most of that in the east and south. Elsewhere it will be mixed again, although there will be some more widespread drier weather early in the new week. Turning more unsettled again later on as low pressure returns, most of the rain and wind to the west.

Monday 31/7/17
Low pressure remains to the north of Scotland on Monday. This brings a further day of sunshine and showers across most of Scotland, Ireland, western Wales and much of northwest England. There will be less showers in southern, eastern and central parts of England as well as eastern Wales with the best sunshine here and some of these areas staying dry throughout the day. Highs at 17 to 23C.

Tuesday 1/8/17
A southwesterly flow on Tuesday as low pressure clears to the north. This brings more scattered showers to Ireland and Scotland with a few on other western coasts. Generally though many places are expected to be dry with sunny spells, the best in the east. Tops near 17 to 25C.

Wednesday 2/8/17
Hints of a mostly dry day across much of eastern, central and southern England as well as Wales on Wednesday. Lower pressure west of Ireland pushes fronts eastwards, these bringing rain and strong winds across Ireland and western Scotland. Tops of 18 to 26C.

Thursday 3/8/17
Low pressure is expected to be centred to the northwest of Ireland on Thursday. Rain passes through Scotland and northern England as well as Wales, although more southern and central areas of England are likely to be drier. Showers and strong winds follow into Ireland and western Scotland. Tops at 17 to 25C.

Friday 4/8/17
The area of low pressure is to the north of the UK on Friday. This brings a return to westerly winds and a mix of sunshine and showers. Most of the showers in the west and north where they could be heavy at times. Highs at 17 to 23C.

Saturday 5/8/17
Low pressure to the east on Saturday with a ridge of high pressure building into the west. This is going to bring a day of sunny spells and scattered showers. Most of the showers in northern and eastern areas, but drier west and south. Tops at 17 to 23C.
