Duty forecaster: Garry Nicholson

Humid south, fresher north

A mixed first week to July, as a slack westerly pattern influences the British Isles. A lot of cloud cover, and occasional rain or drizzle spreading in from the west. Feeling warm in any sunshine. Later in the week, the weather pattern is likely to become more active, with a risk of some thundery rain developing.

Monday 03/07/16
High pressure to the south of Britain. A westerly breeze, strongest in northern areas. Many places dry, with sunny spells best in east & north-eastern areas. Drizzly showers in the west & north-west, locally frequent in western Scotland. Mostly cloudy in the west, and rather dull in the south-west. Low pressure west of Ireland may see a more organised area of rain or drizzle spread from the west later. Highs 17 to 22C.

Tuesday 04/07/16
Detail is uncertain, as slack pressure influences the British Isles. A weak frontal system moves in from the Atlantic, bringing extensive cloud, and outbreaks of rain or drizzle, mainly to western areas of England & Wales. Patchy rain spreads east, but should amount to very little in central & south-eastern areas. Scotland too may escape largely dry, with a few showers in the north. Light winds. Highs 16 to 23C.

Wednesday 05/07/16
A generally stagnant weather pattern continues through midweek, with a lot of cloud, and areas of patchy rain or drizzle. Isolated showers breaking out. Quite humid in the south, and murky around coasts in the south & south-west. Limited sunshine. Light and variable winds overall, mainly southerly. Warm in any sun. Highs 18 to 24C.

Thursday 06/07/16
Low pressure to the north-west introduces some mobility to the weather pattern later in the week. Fronts bring a risk of rain to the north-west, whilst a humid air mass across southern Britain may result in thundery showers breaking out locally. A south-westerly breeze. Feeling warm where sunshine breaks through. Highs 19 to 25C.

Friday 07/07/16
Detail very uncertain later in the week. Remaining warm and humid toward the south-east, whilst fronts moving in from the west may see areas of rain or possible thunderstorms break out. Highs 17 to 24C.

Saturday 08/07/16
Low confidence. A cold front moves into humid air and may trigger areas of thundery rain before fresher air arrives from the west. Windy in the north as low pressure crosses Scotland. Highs 16 to 23C.
