Thunderstorm risk midweek
Briefly hot and humid

Issued: 0900hrs Friday 14th July 2017
Duty forecaster: Garry Nicholson

Often dry for many places

A south-westerly wind brings rain or drizzle to the north-west this weekend. Then high pressure builds across the country by Monday. Temperatures are likely to rise in the south by midweek, and as things become humid there is a risk of thunderstorms breaking out, although these very hit and miss.

Monday 17/07/17
High pressure centred across the British Isles brings a fair day with plenty of sunshine for most places. A weakening cold front affects the south, with variable cloud and perhaps a local shower, but should soon fade. A westerly breeze for northern Scotland may produce a few drizzly showers for the North-west Highlands. A fresh easterly breeze for English Channel coasts. Light winds elsewhere. A fresh feel, temperatures 17 to 22C.

Tuesday 18/07/17
High pressure centred toward the east allows a warm and humid air mass to expand across the country from the south. Many places staying dry with lots of sunshine, turning hazy in the south. A freshening south-easterly winds. Later thundery bursts of rain may develop from France and run into southern counties of England. Temperatures 20 to 23C for many, but 25 to 27C south.

Wednesday 19/07/17
Confidence of detail is low. Hot and humid in the south-east, with a risk of thunderstorms spreading northwards. Whilst many places may well avoid these, there is a risk of some torrential downpours. Low pressure focused toward the north-west may give showery rain to Scotland and Ireland. Temperatures ranging from 17 to 22C north & west, up to 25C Midlands, to perhaps 30C south-east.

Thursday 20/07/17
Low confidence. Areas of thundery rain clearing north-eastwards, followed by fresher conditions with sunny spells and a few showers. Feeling humid in the east. Highs 18 to 25C.

Friday 21/07/17
Pressure may rebuild from the south-west, allowing conditions to settle down again. A good deal of sunshine. A few showers toward the north-west. Highs 17 to 23C.

Saturday 22/07/17
High pressure centred toward the south-west. Fair weather for many. Scattered showers in the north. Highs 18 to 24C.
