An area of rain, sleet and snow affects southern parts of the UK today with snow falling to low levels for many. Elsewhere it will be a drier day with good spells of sunshine though wintry showers are expected over northwestern-facing coasts and hills. Chilly with a widespread frost and ice patches first thing.

A very cold start to the day across the UK and Ireland with a widspread frost and ice patches for many. An area of rain, sleet and snow works its way across Wales and the southern half of England this morning with snow falling to lower levels here. Wintry showers affect northern and western parts of Scotland as well as parts of Ireland. Some good spells of sunshine elsewhere across Scotland and between showers for Ireland.

Patchy snow continues to fall over south-central and southeastern parts of England through the afternoon and it will remain rather cloudy across the southern half of England. Good spells of brightness continue elsewhere while wintry showers tend to become confined to northwestern-facing coasts and hills. A chilly day with highs in the low single digits for most.

The snow-bearing front clears to the southeast of England during this evening allowing mostly clear skies to develop across the UK and Ireland. A scattering of wintry showers continues over northwestern areas.
