Duty forecaster: Simon Keeling

Cool overall and mixed, with the risk of New Year wintry showers in the north

It's a chilly run up to the New Year with the promise of some colder weather arriving through New Years Day. This brings the threat of some snow showers to northern hills. Next week is indicated to be cool overall with some showers north and east, but mostly dry elsewhere. perhaps turning briefly more unsettled again towards the end of the forecast period.

New Years Eve

The year ends with high pressure to the south and low pressure to the north. A mostly fair day to come across England and Wales with sunny spells, the best in the east and south. Mostly dry in Scotland and Ireland too, although some drizzle again affecting western coasts and hills. A front brings heavier bursts of rain through Shetland, Orkney and into northern Scotland during the day, this spreading south through the evening. Much of Englad, Wales and southern Ireland should stay dry for the evenings celebrations. Highs at 6 to 10C.

New Years Day
A cold front is likely to pass southwards during the night and into New Year's Day, bringing rain for a time, which may only reach the far south later in the day. Colder air follows from the north, and showers will turn increasingly wintry over the hills. Some sunshine developing as the rain clears too. Highs 3 to 8C.

Holiday Monday 2/1/17
