Becoming cooler through the weekend and next week, most rain in west

A mix week ahead with most rain affecting western parts of the UK and eastern Ireland. More eastern and suffers areas are drier overall but will be rather cloudy with some drizzle as well as fog on hills and coasts. A tendency for temperatures to be cooling towards the weekend and into next week with fog becoming more widespread, and a risk of frost too.

Thursday 15/12/16
Low pressure is to the west on Thursday with high pressure remaining east of the UK. Fronts bringing rain, some of it heavy to western Ireland, this edging east during the day. The remnants of fronts bringing lots of cloud and damp conditions to much of England and Wales with hills and coastal fog. Drier in much of Scotland and the east of Ireland at first but rain arrives later. Staying dry in northern Scotland. Highs at 9 to 12C.


Friday 16/12/16
Pressure builds west and east of the UK and Ireland on Friday, but a shallow are of low pressure brings some fronts over the top of the UK giving cloud and outbreaks of rain. Most of this is likely to be across southern and eastern Scotland, western England and Wales as well as eastern Ireland. Damp and drizzly with some fog patches in the rest of England. Brighter in western Ireland and the rest of Ireland with cloud breaking and some sunny spells forming. Highs at 7 to 11C.


Saturday 17/12/16
Pressure remains high on Saturday although still with the remains of fronts over much of England and Wales. This gives low cloud and drizzle for many, although drier air should start to bring some brightness to the east. Drier overall in central and northern Scotland as well as much of Ireland. Highs at 5 to 10C.
 


Sunday 18/12/16
High pressure remains on Sunday. It is likely to be rather murky day again through England, Wales and southern Scotland. Fog may be reluctant to clear some places, with further low cloud and mist affecting coasts and hills. Some brighter spells in Ireland and most of Scotland, although rain affects northern Scotland. Highs at 5 to 9C so feeling cooler for all.


Monday 19/12/16
A ridge of high pressure extends through the UK and Ireland on Monday. This brings broken cloud and drier weather into many areas. Probably more cloud in western Ireland with the risk of some drizzle here. A cooler day at 5 to 7C.

Tuesday 20/12/16
High pressure remains over the southern half of the UK and Ireland on Tuesday. It ay be a frosty and foggy start to the day here. Cloud and some drizzle in western Scotland and the north and west of Ireland. Dryer in eastern and southern Scotland with sunny spells.Chilly for many at 3 to 6C but milder western Scotland and western Ireland at 9C.
