Week ahead - August 21, 2018
Changeable weekend
Sunday looking best

Issued: 1000hrs Tuesday 21st August 2018
Duty forecaster: Garry Nicholson

A mixed westerly weather pattern persists

Fresher air will have moved across the country by the end of this week, lowering temperatures compared to the current humid spell. Showery conditions for Friday and Saturday, with a risk of some organised rain developing. Sunday should improve as pressure builds, but further rain may come back in from the west by Monday.

Friday 24/08/18
A fresh west to northwesterly breeze. Sunshine and showers. Rain most frequent toward the north-west. Heavy and frequent showers possible across the Scottish Highlands. Mainly dry central and southern England, with just brief passing showers. Good amounts of sun around the south coast. A few heavy showers reaching eastern districts in the afternoon. Fairly cool, just 14 to 17C Scotland, Ireland and the north-west of England & Wales. Up to 18 to 21C Midlands and south.

Saturday 25/08/18
Precise detail uncertain. West or northwesterly winds will maintain a showery and cool pattern across the country. Bursts of rain most likely across Scotland, but a scattering of showers possible elsewhere. A risk of a zone of more organised rain passing east across England and Wales should a small area of low pressure develop. Some sunshine away from showers. Pressure is then likely to build allowing skies to clear into the night, dropping cool. Highs 15 to 22C, warmest in the south.

Sunday 26/08/18
A brief ridge of high pressure is likely to build from the west, bringing a brighter day with good amounts of sunshine. A few showers possible, but should fade, leaving broken cloud and sunshine. A possibility of fronts returning from the Atlantic later, thickening cloud in the west, and a risk of rain developing for Ireland, later western Britain. Wind mostly light, although brisk northwesterlies may affect eastern coasts in the morning. Highs 16 to 22C.

Monday 27/08/18
Fronts moving back in from the Atlantic bring a risk of rain developing, most likely for west and north-western Britain and Ireland, but some rain may spill eastwards through the day. The east & south-east of England should escape driest for longest. A fresh west to south-westerly breeze. Highs 15 to 23C, warmest south-east.

Tuesday 28/08/18
Northern regions are likely to keep mixed conditions, with some rain coming in from the west, focused on western Scotland. Largely dry and bright further south as high pressure tries to build from the south-west. Highs 16 to 24C.

Wednesday 29/08/18
A general westerly theme continues, with fairly cloudy skies and patchy rain - the greatest risk of rain focused toward the north-west. Dry and bright south and east. Highs 16 to 24C.
