Duty forecaster: Claire Darbinyan

Mainly dry, some frost and fog developing

The first week of January will see a very settled spell of weather, with the strongest area of high pressure seen for several years likely to develop across the British Isles. Beneath this high there is a risk of extensive and stubborn fog. Temperatures will be cooler than of late with a greater risk of frosty mornings.

Friday 04/01/19
High pressure is dominant and centred over southern Britain. It will be a cold, frosty start to the day for all and overcast with some patches of fog in Scotland and eastern England. Elsewhere, skies should be clear and there should be some good bright spells for the morning. Skies will cloud over for England and Wales through the afternoon and the best of the brightness will be over Ireland and west-central Scotland. Winds will be light. Highs at 3 to 7C, cooler where fog persists.

Saturday 05/01/19
High pressure remains in charge bringing another settled day of weather. The day will start cold with a widespread ground frost and some icy patches expected. It will start bright for much of Scotland and northern England but cloud will encroach from the north and south through the day. It will stay dry with light winds. Highs at 3 to 7C.

Sunday 06/01/19
Another day of high pressure keeping the weather fairly settled. A cold start to the day will allow a widespread ground frost to develop once more. Some mist and fog patches are also likely first thing. Light winds and dry for all with variable amounts of cloud. Cloudiest in the north with the best chance of any brighter weather for the south of England. Fog perhaps lingering for parts of the Midlands and the southwest. Highs at 2 to 7C.

Monday 07/01/19
A weak front may graze the northwest of Scotland bringing some light rain for a time. High pressure dominating elsewhere. It will be a cold start for England and Wales with ground frost likely for many. Dry but overcast for the southern half of Scotland and the rest of the UK and Ireland. High temperatures of 3 to 8C.

Tuesday 08/01/19
Another weak front may pass to the north of Scotland but high pressure seems likely to remain dominant. A cloudy day with some light rain in the northwest. Best of the sun in the southwest. Highs at 4 to 9C.

Wednesday 09/01/19
Wednesday sees a weak front moving down the eastern coasts of Scotland and England bringing some light rain to coastal areas as high pressure shifts to the west. It will be an overcast day for the British Isles with stubborn fog for many. High temperatures at 3 to 8C.
