Winter is coming as temperatures fall and the risk of sleet and snow increases
The weather undergoes a change to cooler conditions this week. These more notable from Thursday. A risk of some snow over the high ground of northern England and southern Scotland later in the week. More unsettled next week, cooler too with the threat of sleet and snow for many.

A chilly start as a ridge of high pressure builds into the UK and Ireland. There may still be some wintry showers affecting eastern Scotland and eastern coasts of England but generally it should be dry and bright with some good spells of sunshine. Cloud increasing in Ireland in the morning and then western parts of the UK in the afternoon. Some drizzle drifting onto the coasts. Highs at 2C in northern Scotland, 7C in southwest England and western Ireland.
An area of low pressure drifts through Ireland on Friday. This brings cloud, rain and showers with it. However, as the rain bands move into colder air over northern England and southern Scotland they may turn to snow. Cold but drier in central and northern Scotland. Highs around 3C in northern Scotland, 10C in southern England.
Low pressure is expected to be over the far south of England on Saturday. Rain and a cold, brisk, northeast wind affecting much of southern Eng;and. Drier in central England and Wales. Dry too with sunshine in northern England and Scotland as well as most of Ireland. Highs at 2C in northern Scotland, 7C in southern England.
A weak ridge of high pressure over the country on Sunday bringing a frosty start for many. The risk of some wintry showers in the far southeast. Increasing cloud in Scotland with drizzle and sleet in the north and west. Mostly dry with some brighter spells developing elsewhere. Cold for all at 3 to 5C.
Possibly a little milder on Monday. Lots of cloud and weak fronts pass east. Drizzle and low cloud in the west. Snow over the Highlands of Scotland. Rather murky for many. Note confidence is low. Highs at 2 to 6C.
A colder and more mixed day. Fronts sweeping east taking sleet, which may turn to snow, with them. Sunshine and wintry showers following. Breezy for all. Highs at 3 to 5C.
