Wet and windy with a risk of flooding; drier next week for a time
Periods of rain, some of it heavy in the next couple of days, turning milder as well. A risk of localised flooding. The rain turns lighter into next week and conditions become a little cooler with temperaures closer to average. Confidence is low but Christmas Day and Boxing Day look drier and brighter for many at this time.

A weak ridge of high pressure builds into southwestern areas on Monday but a west-northwesterly flow dominates across the country. This brings cloud and outbreaks of rain to western coastal regions but there will also be plenty of brightness for central and eastern areas. A breezy day across the country with high temperatures at 5 to 9C.
Christmas Eve 24/12/19
High pressure builds across southern parts of the country into Christmas Eve bringing a dry and bright day for much of England, Ireland and Wales after early mist and fog patches clear. A westerly breeze over northern areas brings frequent showers to western coasts and hills of Scotland, Northern Ireland and, perhaps, into the northwest of England. Drier and brighter to the east. Highs at 4 to 7C.
Christmas Day 25/12/19
Confidence is low at this time but it could be that Christmas Day starts mostly dry and bright across the UK and Ireland with just the odd scattered shower. Early mist and fog should clear while occasional showers may develop over the northern half of the country. Low pressure may arrive from the southwest later bringing unsettled conditions to Ireland, England and Wales. High temperatures at 2 to 10C.
Boxing Day 26/12/19
Again, confidence is low, but higher pressure could hold on over northern areas through Boxing Day to give another mostly dry and fine day here after early mist and fog patches clear. A weak area of low pressure may arrive from the southwest later bringing cloud and outbreaks of rain to southwest Ireland and southern parts of England and Wales. Highs at 2 to 9C.
Friday may see high pressure move to the east and low pressure arrive to the west. A mostly cloudy day for the UK and Ireland but feeling milder, particularly to the south where warmer air arrives. A few isolated showers to the west. Highs at 3 to 11C.
Saturday may see outbreaks of rain and strong winds spread across the country as fronts push eastward through the day. Heavy rain is followed by scattered showers. Staying milder with a southerly flow. Highs at 8 to 12C.
