Wet & windy New Year
Risk of stormy winds

Issued: 1000hrs Tuesday 26th December 2017
Duty forecaster: Garry Nicholson

Temperatures rising again following post-Christmas chill

A chilly northwesterly pattern will affect the British Isles over the next few days. There will be some snow, although most accumulations will be confined to higher ground. Toward the New Year period, weather systems are expected to move in from the Atlantic, bringing spells of heavy rain and strong winds. A threat of damaging gales and high seas are likely, especially in the west.

Friday 29/12/17
Fronts spread north-eastwards across Britain, bringing rain preceded by snow over the hills. Milder air will eventually spread to all areas from the south-west. Further heavy rain is likely to move in from the Atlantic later. Blustery winds, possible gales around coasts in the west & south. Highs 2 to 7C, perhaps milder in the south-west, and temperatures tending to rise even after dark.

Saturday 30/12/17
Various complex centres of low pressure are expected to pass across the British Isles, bringing strong to gale force winds, possible severe gales in northern & western areas. Frontal rain will spread eastwards to all parts, and a trailing front may extend back across the south of Britain, resulting in a very wet day for some areas. Generally mild, highs 7 to 11C, warmest south.

New Year's Eve 31/12/17
An active westerly regime is likely to continue. A risk of gales or severe gales. Heavy rain in the north & west, possible snow over the mountains. Further fronts may extend across southern areas so many places can expect wet weather at some point. Eastern areas should escape driest. Highs 6 to 10C.

New Year's Day 01/01/18
Detail is uncertain, but a generally unsettled pattern is expected to continue. Areas of persistent rain or showers, wettest in the west & north-west. Strong to gale force winds. Mild overall, especially in the south. Highs 6 to 12C.

Tuesday 02/01/18
Staying unsettled. Periods of wind and rain, possible gales. Wettest in the west. Highs 6 to 12C.

Wednesday 03/01/18
Staying showery, perhaps a little cooler. Pressure may briefly build across the south. Highs 5 to 10C.
