Severe gales at the weekend, varying temperatures, but milder Christmas

A mixed week ahead with sometimes windy conditions and severe gales affecting many through the weekend. Temperature varying significantly throughout the week, although turning milder into Christmas which at the present time is expected to be rather cloudy and most dry apart from rain in northern Scotland and drizzle over western coasts and hills.

Friday 20/12/24
Rain for Scotland and Ireland on Friday morning as fronts move east. Most of the rain in western areas. Increasingly cloudy for England and Wales with drizzle in the west and some fog shrouding hills. A few brighter spells in eastern England at first but the cloud increasing here too. By afternoon rain is into northern England, Wales, the Midlands and southwest England as drier and chillier weather reaches Scotland and Ireland. A stiff westerly breezy and highs at 6 to 8C


Saturday 21/12/24
Low pressure passing north of Scotland on Saturday. A windy day with widespread gales, these severe in Scotland with gusts of 70 mph. Frequent, heavy showers also affecting northern western Scotland, some turning wintry over the hills. Showers too in western parts of England and Wales, some of them heavy. A band of rain passing south into central and southern areas in the afternoon, most of it showery. Highs at 6C in northern Scotland, 12C in southern England.


Sunday 22/12/24
A colder day on Sunday with a significant wind-chill. Further showers, some of them heavy across northern and western areas with sleet and snow over the tops of the hills of Scotland, and northern England. Brighter and drier across eastern and southern areas of England and Wales. Tops at 4 to 6C.


 


Monday 23/12/24
A ridge of high pressure builds through Monday, bringing a fair and frosty start to the day. Cloud increasing across Ireland, Scotland and western areas of England and Wales bringing some rain or drizzle here in the afternoon. Highs at 6 to 8C.



 
 
 


Christmas Eve 24/12/24
Front bringing cloud and rain into western Scotland on Christmas Eve. Lots of cloud affecting many western areas of the country. Some drizzle over western coasts and hills. Drier across central and eastern parts with some bright or sunny spells here. Mild for all. Windy in western Scotland. Highs at 9 to 12C but 7C in northern Scotland.

Christmas Day 25/12/24
High pressure to the south of the country. Drizzle over western coasts and hills. Brighter in the eastern areas with sunny spells. Cloud and rain in northern Scotland and windy here as well. Highs at 10 to 14C.
