Some dry days south

Issued: 1000hrs Wednesday 3rd August 2016
Duty forecaster: Garry Nicholson

Briefly hot in south-east this weekend

High pressure builds from the south-west on Friday, bringing a series of dry and warm days to central & southern Britain. Meanwhile, a deep area of low pressure passes north of Scotland this weekend, giving a risk of gales for a time in the far north. Next week is expected to see cool and showery conditions develop for all.

Saturday 06/08/16
High pressure to the south brings a dry day with warm sunshine for the Midlands, south & east. Fronts bring rain or drizzle to Ireland & Scotland, turning persistent over the West Highlands. Thickening cloud for western England & Wales, perhaps a spot of rain on western hills, and the south-west may become murky. Freshening south-westerly winds, later gales in the far north-west as a strong Atlantic low quickly develops. Highs 18 to 21C north & west, 23 to 25C central & south-east England, feeling humid.

Sunday 07/08/16
Low pressure passes quickly to the north of Scotland. A windy day for northern Britain, reaching gale force for several hours in northern Scotland, but should slowly ease. Much lighter winds in the south. A weak cold front moves east across northern Britain, bringing variable cloud and risk of a few showers. Dry with plenty of sunshine in the south. Fresh in the north, 16 to 19C, but reaching 23 to 25C central areas, and still humid in south-east, highs 27C.

Monday 08/08/16
High pressure to the south maintains a dry and bright day for much south & eastern Britain. Low pressure and fronts toward the north-west bring freshening winds and showery rain to Ireland & Scotland, which may deteriorate to persistent rain. Risk of outbreaks of rain spreading to western England & Wales through the day, although timing uncertain. Temperatures ranging from a fresh 17 to 20C north & west, to a fairly humid 23 to 26C south & east.

Tuesday 09/08/16
A north-westerly pattern influences the country, bringing cooler conditions to all areas. Showers in the north are likely to become increasingly widespread, locally merging into longer spells of rain. However, there will be sunny spells, and some places may escape dry much of the day, although detail uncertain. Temperatures 16 to 19C north, or 21 to 23C south.

Wednesday 10/08/16
Little change to the pattern as high pressure resides over the Atlantic and low pressure is toward Scandinavia, ushering in a period of north to north-westerly winds. A mix of sunshine and showers, some heavy and frequent rain is possible, risk of hail and thunder. Locally dry for many hours. Feeling cool, particularly north, 15 to 17C, up to 20 or 21C south.

Thursday 11/08/16
Expect another cool day, with sunshine and showers. Some frequent heavy bursts, again with a risk of local hail and thunder. Breezy at times. Temperatures rather cool for August, just 14 to 18C, may reach 20C in the south.
