Unsettled and wet this week, then colder and more settled next week
Unsettled this week as the jet stream blows low pressure and fronts eastwards through the UK and Ireland. These bring rain, some of it heavy with a risk of localised flooding in places. Mild through much of the south but cooler in Scotland where there could be some sleet or snow on the highest hills. Indications of some quieter weather setting in next week as high pressure builds. An increasing risk of frost and fog.

A southwest flow developing on Thursday. Fronts will be passing eastwards bringing cloud and rain into Ireland early in the morning, then Scotland during the morning and afternoon. Western coasts and hills of Wales and England also seeing more cloud and drizzle, this turning to rain. Increasing cloud elsewhere with some spots of drizzle and parts rain in the Midlands and southern England, eastern areas tending to be drier. Highs at 13C in southern England, 9C in northern Scotland.
A vigorous area of low pressure passing through Ireland and Scotland on Friday. This brings rain and strong winds eastwards with a risk of widespread gales. There will be heavy periods of rain, most in the west. The rain clears to showers from all but Scotland where the rain turns to sleet and snow on hills. Highs at 5 to 12C
Low pressure is to the east on Saturday with a ridge building to the west. This brings a fresh to strong, cool, north to northwest flow. There will be sunny spells. Showers in the north and east, some wintry on Scottish hills. Highs at 4 to 8C.
Another small area of low pressure passes through the country on Sunday. The rain is likely to be rather showers before it clears east and south. Brighter weather then follows from the north and west, although some showers in Scotland with snow on hills. Highs at 3 to 9C.
Higher pressure builds on Monday. This gives a frosty morning. There could be some mist and fog patches, these slow to clear. Good spells of sunshine where the fog clears. Highs at 3 to 6C.
Higher pressure remains over the country on Tuesday. Morning mist and fog coud be widespread in places, but it should slowly lift. A widespread frost as well at first. Then dry for most with sunny spells. Highs at 2 to 6C.
