Up and down temperatures, risk of early sleet and snow in north and east, windy and unsettled next week

Changeable week ahead. There will be periods of rain, sleet and snow at first, most of this affecting Scotland and eastern England. Tending to be dry at the weekend before more wind, rain and showers arrive next week together with less chilly conditions.

For the weather for the next few days click here

Saturday 16/1/21
An area of rain, some of it heavy will be spreading eastwards through the night and into Saturday morning. This could be some sleet and snow to central and eastern England and eastern Scotland for a time, perhaps with a brief covering of snow at low levels. Brighter and drier weather should follow from the west with sunny spells developing, although more persistent rain and sleet in western Scotland. Highs at 4 to 6C in the east, 9C in the west and south.

Sunday 17/1/21
A ridge of high pressure builds on Sunday, although low pressure stays in the east. There will be some wintry showers in northern and western Scotland. Elsewhere it is likely to be brighter although always with a fair amount of cloud, the best of any sunny spells in the east. Highs at 5 to 8C.

Monday 18/1/21
Monday sees low pressure north of Scotland as well as west of Ireland. Wintry showers or even longer spells of sleet with snow on high ground over Scotland. Rain affecting Ireland as well as Wales and southern England. Drier in eastern areas. Highs at 4 to 8C.

Tuesday 19/1/21
Low pressure to the east of the country on Tuesday. Wintry showers to the north and east, these persistent in places. Drier in the west with some bright or sunny spells. Thicker cloud and more persistent rain in the far south. Highs at 4 to 7C.

Wednesday 20/1/21
Low-pressure is expected to be over the UK and Ireland on Wednesday. This may bring a windy day with periods of rain, although some sleet and snow over the high ground of Scotland and Northern Ireland. The heavy showers always affecting western areas. If you are showers in the east. Highs at 6 to 9C.

Thursday 21/1/21
Low pressure is likely to be in the North Sea on Thursday. This brings another breezy day with a mix of rain and showers. Feeling chilly too. Highs at 5 to 8C.
