Week ahead - December 14, 2018
Unsettled
Not as cold

Issued: 1300 Friday 14th December 2018
Duty forecaster: Claire Darbinyan

An unsettled outlook for the coming week

It will be rather unsettled over the next week. High pressure over Europe continues to hold low pressure systems at bay over the Atlantic but through next week the ridge will recede allowing low pressure to influence the weather over the British Isles once more. It will feel less cold than this week with wet and windy conditions prevailing at times.

Monday 17/12/18
A deep area of low pressure lies over the Atlantic to the west of Scotland on Monday while a high pressure ridge extends across much of Europe leading to a tight pressure gradient across the British Isles. Monday will start bright and dry for most though cloud will build from the west through the day with rain, accompanied by strengthening winds, reaching most of Ireland and western fringes of Scotland and Wales by the early evening. Temperatures at 5 to 11C.

Tuesday 18/12/18
Low pressure remains over the Atlantic on Tuesday extending fronts across the British Isles. Tuesday will be a cloudy and wet day for most with the heaviest rain for western fringes of Scotland, southern Wales and southwestern England. Cloud may break over Ireland by the evening. It will be another windy day with gales in places. Highs at 6 to 10C.

Wednesday 19/12/18
Low pressure remains to the west of Scotland on Wednesday. Cloud will be more broken on Wednesday than on Tuesday with most areas seeing a mixture of sunny spells and showers. The best of the brightness will be over southeastern England while the showers could merge to give more prolonged spells of rain for Ireland, western Scotland, northwestern England and Wales. Winds will ease somewhat from Tuesday. High temperatures at 5 to 9C.

Thursday 20/12/18
Low pressure is again in control through Thursday but the centre of the system moves over Scotland and starts to fill. Thursday will be another day of sunny spells and scattered showers. The heaviest showers will fall over the Lake District while northwest Scotland and Ireland will see the best of the brightness. Highs at 5 to 9C.

Friday 21/12/18
The low pressure centre over the UK continues to fill and weaken. There will be a north-south split in the weather: dry and bright in the north; cloudy and wet in the south. Windy along the south coast of England. Highs at 3 to 9C.

Saturday 22/12/18
Low pressure moves off over the near continent but extends a trough over southern England leading to another north-south weather divide. Cloudy, wet and windy conditions prevail for the south while the north will see some good sunny spells with scattered showers. Highs at 4 to 9C.
