High pressure dominates
Dry, overcast & foggy

Issued: 1000 Wednesday 2nd January 2019
Duty forecaster: Claire Darbinyan

Mainly dry, some frosty mornings and fog

The first week of January will see a very settled spell of weather, with the strongest area of high pressure seen for several years likely to develop across the British Isles. Beneath this high there is a risk of extensive and stubborn fog. Temperatures will be cooler than of late with some frosty mornings expected through the coming weekend.

Saturday 05/01/19
High pressure centred over the south of England brings a settled day of weather. The day will start cold with a widespread ground frost and some icy patches expected. It will start bright for much of Scotland and northern England but cloud will encroach from the north and west through the day. Early fog patches over central and southern England may be slow to lift and could persist through the day. It will stay dry with light winds. Highs at 3 to 7C.

Sunday 06/01/19
Another day of high pressure keeping the weather fairly settled. A cold start to the day will allow a widespread ground frost to develop once more particularly over southern areas. Some mist and fog patches are also likely in the south first thing. Light winds and dry for all with variable amounts of cloud. Cloudiest in the north where a weak front may bring some light rain or drizzle to northwestern areas. The best chance of any brighter weather for the south of England. Fog perhaps lingering for parts of the Midlands and the southwest. Highs at 4 to 8C.

Monday 07/01/19
High pressure centred over central England continues to dominate the weather. Monday will start cold for England and Wales with ground frost likely for many. Dry but overcast for Scotland and Northern Ireland. It will be another dry day with variable amounts of cloud around. Best of the sunshine for Wales and the southwest. High temperatures of 4 to 8C.

Tuesday 08/01/19
A weak front may pass to the north of Scotland but high pressure seems likely to remain dominant. A cloudy day with some light rain in the northwest. Best of the sun in the southwest. Highs at 5 to 9C.

Wednesday 09/01/19
Wednesday sees another front moving into northwestern areas where it may produce longer periods of rain. It will be an overcast day for most of the British Isles. The best of any sunshine will be in the southwest. High temperatures at 6 to 11C.

Thursday 10/01/19
High pressure centred over the English Channel will continue to keep the weather settled. It should be a dry day across the country with most areas seeing a bright sunny afternoon after a cloudy start. High temperatures at 5 to 9C.
