2024 starts wet and windy but then turning colder and drier at the end of the week

An unsettled start to the week with wind, rain and showers. The rain heavy at times and the showers turning increasingly wintry over the hills of Scotland. The winds ease in the second half of the week as there are indications of conditions then turning drier, frosty and colder by the weekend.

Tuesday 2/1/24
A front passing north and east on Tuesday taking a fragmenting area of rain with it. Mostly in the Midlands, East Anglia, northern England and Northern Ireland in the morning, then into Scotland in the afternoon, heavy in the west. Heavy showers following through Ireland, England and Wales, some thundery. Some drier weather in Ireland later, although rain turn heavy and thundery in eastern England and eastern Scotland for a time. Highs near 5C northern Scotland, 14C southeast England.


Wednesday 3/1/24
Low pressure west of Scotland affecting the whole country on Wednesday. Rain, some heavy in Scotland. Heavy showers affecting Wales and western England as well as southern coasts. Sleet and snow over the Highlands and Grampians. Fewer showers in the east of England and Ireland. Breezy again. Highs at 3 to 10C.


 


Thursday 4/1/24
Low pressure remains on Thursday. Another day of sunny spells and showers. Most showers in western areas with few in the east. Wintry showers western Highlands. A risk of heavier, more persistent showers in the south. Highs near 3C northern Scotland, 7C northern England, 10C southern England.


 


Friday 5/1/24
Low pressure dominates again through Friday. Turning cooler for all. There will be some rain or sleet in eastern Scotland with a further areas of showers in southern Ireland and southwest England. Most other areas will be dry abd bright with sunny spells. An early frost for many. Highs at 5 to 7C.


 


Saturday 6/1/24
Higher pressure building north of Scotland on Saturday. This is going to be bringing a more north to northeast flow. Temperatures will be falling. A few showers in the east but mostly dry with the best sunshine in western areas. A widespread frost. Highs at 2 to 5C for most, 7C in the southwest.

Sunday 7/1/24
High pressure stays north of Scotland. Cold for all. Cloud and some wintry showers in eastern areas, mostly in eastern Scotland. Best sunshine in the west. Highs at 2 to 4C.
