Week ahead - October 25, 2017
Becoming cooler
Largely dry weekend

Issued: 0930hrs Wednesday 25th October 2017
Duty forecaster: Garry Nicholson

Showery, snow on hills; frosty mornings

It will be turning much colder during the week ahead. The first push of chilly air affects northern Britain on Sunday when showers will give snow on the Scottish mountains. A widespread frost is expected on Monday morning. Things may become briefly milder, but a more direct northerly wind develops by midweek. Air coming straight from the Arctic brings a risk of snow showers to low levels in northern Britain. Currently, the Bonfire Night weekend is looking chilly and wet.

Saturday 28/10/17
High pressure centred toward the south-west of the British Isles. Dry for most, although quite cloudy. Some sunshine breaking through, best in the east. Showery rain around coasts and hills in Wales, north-west England, western Scotland & Northern Ireland. A fresh west to north-westerly breeze. Chance of fog patches in the morning in the far south-west, and a rural frost is possible in Wales. Highs 11 to 16C.

Sunday 29/10/17
A cooler day overall as winds turn northerly. Bright with sunny spells for many places. Showers likely for eastern coasts, and also northern Scotland, which may be frequent at times. Falling as snow across the Scottish mountains, perhaps to quite low levels. Chance of frost in the morning where sheltered from the wind. Temperatures reaching 11 to 13C in central-southern areas, but may struggle at 7 to 10C in Scotland.

Monday 30/10/17
Pressure is expected to rebuild across the country, which may lead to a widespread frost to start Monday morning. A dry and bright day overall, with plenty of sunshine. Cloud may build from the west as fronts approach, and patchy rain may develop for Ireland and north-western Britain later. Light winds, but south-westerlies tending to freshen. Highs 10 to 13C, perhaps cooler in the north.

Tuesday 31/10/17
Detail is uncertain. Fronts moving in from the Atlantic bring a risk of rain developing and turning persistent in the west & north. Central & south-eastern areas may stay dry, although a risk of some rain developing. A brisk west to south-westerly wind. Highs 9 to 14C.

Wednesday 01/11/17
A front passes south-eastwards, bringing a spell of rain to most places. Brighter skies will follow, with sunny spells. Showers for the north & north-west, may become locally frequent. Blustery winds, and becoming colder again in the north. Highs 9 to 14C.

Thursday 02/11/17
A threat of much colder air spreading across the country. Showers frequent around coasts exposed to a northerly wind. Sunny spells and scattered showers for central & southern areas. Snow on northern hills. Highs 7 to 12C, but feeling colder in the wind.
