Northerly winds dominate the week ahead
Make the most of warm and humid air extending across central & southern Britain this weekend, because next week is looking distinctly chilly for mid-August as the winds switches round to the north. A showery pattern will dominate, some locally heavy and frequent bursts, plus gusty winds.

Sunday 07/08/16 High pressure lies south-west of Britain, whilst an active low passes north of Scotland. A weakening cold front moves south-east, bringing cloudy skies for a time, perhaps showery rain on western hills. The south & south-east should keep plenty of sunshine. Gales in far north ease, but it remains windy across northern Britain. Lighter winds in south. Highs 17 to 20C north & west, 22 to 25C Midlands & south, locally a humid 27C south-east.
Monday 08/08/16 High pressure continues to influence the south, bringing a fair day with light westerly winds to much of England & Wales. Low pressure and fronts are likely to approach again from the north-west, giving showery rain, turning increasingly persistent in the west & north-west of Britain & Ireland, accompanied by freshening winds. Toward evening, rain may develop more widely. Temperatures 16 to 19C north, 22 to 25C south.
Tuesday 09/08/16 A north-westerly pattern influences the country, bringing cooler conditions to all areas. Showers in the north are likely to become increasingly widespread, locally merging into longer spells of rain. However, there will be sunny spells, and some places may escape dry much of the day, although detail uncertain. Temperatures 15 to 18C north, or 19 to 22C south. Chilly overnight in north, locally close to freezing in Scotland.
Wednesday 10/08/16 Little change to the pattern as high pressure resides over the Atlantic and low pressure is toward Scandinavia, ushering in a period of north to north-westerly winds. A mix of sunshine and showers, some heavy and frequent rain is possible, risk of hail and thunder. Locally dry for many hours. Feeling cool, 14 to 16C north, or 17 to 20C south, and chilly again overnight, widely into single figures and near zero some northern valleys.
Thursday 11/08/16 Expect another cool day, with sunshine and showers. Some frequent heavy bursts, again with a risk of local hail and thunder. Breezy at times. Temperatures rather cool for August, just 14 to 18C, may reach 20C in the south. Cold again overnight, locally close to freezing in the north.
Friday 12/08/16 Pressure may build slowly from the west, bringing longer dry spells and fewer showers. Temperatures may recover a little, but staying below average for August. The breeze may ease. Another chilly night, dipping well into single figures for many. Daytime highs 15 to 21C.
