Widespread hard frosts
Northerly winds bring an Arctic air mass across Britain and Ireland this week. A frontal system moves in from the northwest on Tuesday bringing a risk of snowfalls for northern areas. Central and southern regions largely dry and often sunny. Staying cold later this week, but likely to turn milder and wetter into the weekend.

Tuesday 16/1/24 Generally dry with varied cloud and sun over central and southern England and Wales. Many eastern districts also stay dry. An increasing risk of snowfall for northwest England, Wales, western Scotland and Northern Ireland. Snow may develop widely into central Scotland and northern England later. West to northwesterly breezes. A chilly day for all, highs 1 to 3C for most, up to 6C in far southwest.
Wednesday 17/1/24 Remnants of snowfalls from overnight fade from northern England. A dry and cold day for many with sunshine. Local snow showers for north and west Wales, northern Scotland and onto the north coast of Ireland and Northern Ireland. Extensive frost. Highs 0 to 3C, but some northern areas staying sub-zero all day.
Thursday 18/1/24 Staying very cold but bright with sunshine for many. Extensive hard frost, very low overnight temperatures. Local snow showers near to western coasts with a north to northwesterly breeze. Snow showers locally more frequent in northern Scotland. Highs 0 to 3C, locally higher in southwest.
Friday 19/1/24 A ridge of high pressure builds over the country, maintaining mostly dry weather. Frost and some fog patches. Fronts may approach from the west bringing rain preceded by snow for western regions. Light winds then freshening southwesterlies. Highs lifting 0 to 5C, perhaps milder later.
Saturday 20/1/24 Milder air is likely to extend over the country with a period of rain likely to affect many places, heaviest in the west. A thaw of previous snow cover. Breezy southwesterlies. Highs 5 to 9C.
Sunday 21/1/24 Windy and showery with brisk westerlies likely. Rain most frequent in the northwest, some hill snow. Drier to the south and east. Highs 4 to 9C.
