Cold in the north, milder in the south

Sunday
A band of rain will move across Ireland, Wales and England through Sunday morning but will clear by the early afternoon. A more persistent area of rain will affect Scotland for much of the day and will fall as snow over higher ground. This should clear by the mid-afternoon. A bright and sunny afternoon will follow for the southern half of the country in particular though a further band of rain and cloud will start to build into western areas by the early evening. Strong to near gale force winds for the southern half of the British Isles. Temperatures ranging from 10 to 14C for England and Wales; 5 to 9C for Scotland and Northern Ireland.

Sunday Night
Staying cloudy over night with rain for northern England and western coasts of Ireland, Wales, and England. Clear skies developing over western Scotland and the south of England with a touch of groundfrost likely for these areas by morning. Winds easing for most overnight. Lows of 3 to 6C for Ireland, Scotland and the northwest of England; 8 to 10C in Wales and the southeast. Closer to freezing for the Scottish Highlands.

Monday
A cloudy start to the day on Monday morning for the north of England and western parts of Wales though this should break and clear to leave a largely bright and dry day. Some cloud and drizzle may linger along western coasts. Winds will ease through the day for most areas but will remain strong in the eastern part of the Channel. Temperature highs of 3 to 7C over the northern half of the British Isles; 9 to 13C in the south.

Tuesday
A ridge of high pressure briefly tries to build over the southern half of the country on Tuesday morning before a low pressure system moves in from the Atlantic. Early morning frost and fog is likely, particularly for the northern half of the country. Cloud and rain will build from the southwest as the low pressure system moves in, spreading across Ireland, Wales and much of England by the early evening. Snow and wintry showers possible for Scotland and over higher ground. Northern and eastern areas should stay dry but cloud will build through the afternoon. High temperatures will reach 4 to 8C in Scotland, Northern Ireland, north Wales and northeast England; 10 to 13C elsewhere.
