Broken cloud, cool
Outbreaks of rain west

New Year's Day
High pressure remains to the south of the country to start 2020. It is going to be dry with some spells of sunshine in central and southern areas, although this is likely to be hazy. Early mist and fog patches clearing. Cloudier in Scotland and Ireland because of the increased southwest wind here, this bringing some drizzle in the northwest. Brighter in eastern and southern Scotland as well as central and eastern Ireland. Highs at 6 to 8C.

New Year's Day Night
A mostly dry night although rain moves into the far west and northwest of Scotland and Ireland by the early morning. Cloud increases from the west through the night though skies may stay clear to the southeast. A windy night for northwestern areas with overnight lows at 3 to 8C for most.

Thursday
High pressure to the southeast on Thursday. Rather cloudy in many areas of England and Wales, but generally dry, with the best of any brightness to the southeast. Drizzle affects western Wales. Heavier rain and windier in western Scotland and Ireland. Drier in eastern Scotland and the east of England. Highs at 8 to 11C.

Friday
A cold front passes southeast through the UK and Ireland on Friday. This takes an area of showery rain with it, most of it fairly light. Brighter, cooler weather follows to the north with sunny spells and wintry showers for northern and western Scotland. High temperatures at 5C in northern Scotland, 11C in southern England.
