Rain later south

An area of cloud and showers through Northern Ireland and northern England as well as the Midlands this morning. Drier and brighter as well as cooler in Scotland with good spells of sunshine i the north and west. A few bright spells in southern England too. This afternoon sees cloud increasing for much of England and Wales, a few showers and outbreaks of rain still affecting northern England. More persistent rain and stronger winds moving through southern Ireland, southern Wales, southwest and southern England into the mid to late afternoon. The best sunshine remains in central and northern Scotland. Highs at 8C in northern Scotland, 14C in southern England.

Tuesday Night
Dry to start tonight in northern England and Scotland. rain soon arrives from the southwest and turns heavy at times. The heaviest rain in Ireland, western Wales and southwest England. Drier in northern Scotland and windy here later too. A touch of frost in central Scotland with lows of 0C, nearer 10C in southern England.

Low pressure brings another unsettled day on Wednesday. Heavy rain in Scotland with a risk of flooding in central areas. Drier in the far north. Some morning rain for England and Wales too, although a tendency for it to become drier here during the morning, rain turning to showers and some bright or sunny spells briefly developing. Brighter too in Ireland ahead of more rain in the south by evening. Highs at 7 to 12C.

Storm Ciaran will be crossing the British Isles on Thursday. This brings severe gales and heavy rain. Gusts in excess of 60mph are likely which is strong enough to cause some damage to trees and buildings as well as bringing disruption to transport. Flooding is possible in some areas although it is difficult to see where the worst of this will be right now. Highs at an irrelevant 9 to 12C.
