Simon: As we prepare to batten down the hatches against Storm Hannah this weekend, we've some rain to deal with today. It's passing east away from Ireland now, and will be from Scotland to southern England this afternoon. Severe gales tonight and on Saturday.

Claire: Thunderstorms have been rattling through northern parts of Wales and England this afternoon and are edging into southern Scotland. Thundery showers should ease over England and Wales through this evening though some heavy bursts of rain will persist over parts of Scotland.

Claire: A band of rain is clearing the north of Scotland now while there are plenty of showers around for Wales & southern England. Some heavier bursts of rain persisting for eastern Ireland. Temperatures being held around the low to mid-teens under the cloud.

Claire: We have two fronts making their way northward across the country this morning: one is just about to clear the northern part of Scotland while the other is working its way across England and Wales. Heavy showers will follow later for parts of England & Wales.

Claire: An area of thunderstorms is currently working its way north through the Midlands & northeast Wales. These storms will continue to move north into Yorkshire and the northwest of England. Lightning strikes and torrential downpours are likely within these areas.

Claire: Heavy showers are continuing to edge northward through England and Wales. As these push through the Midlands and into northern parts of England they are expected to intensify and could produce some powerful thunderstorms and torrential downpours this afternoon and this evening.

Claire: A band of rain is currently working its way northward across Ireland while an area of heavy rain, which will be locally thundery, is making its way into the West Country. Ahead of this, to the north, is a good deal of broken cloud and sunny spells.

Claire: Scattered showers over the southwest this evening will spread northward over Ireland and Wales tonight. Tomorrow sees heavy thundery downpours spreading northeastward from the southwest with some heavy bursts of rain expected across the West Country, Wales and Ireland.
