Warm and thundery
Downpours southern Europe

Issued: 0530hrs Tuesday 8th May 2018
Duty forecaster: Garry Nicholson

Dry north; summery across Scandinavia

Tuesday
Little change to the recent weather pattern across Europe. Extensively thundery for the southern half of the continent. Portugal and northern Spain likely dry, and very warm again, highs 28C. Thunderstorms breaking out widely by afternoon for southern and central Spain, southern France and the Alps. Central Italy may escape, but the south of Italy will likely see heavy downpours. Thunderstorms again for the southern Balkans and Greece .
Risk of showers for north-west France, but much of central-northern Europe stays dry and sunny. Reaching the mid to high 20s Celsius for the Low Countries and Germany. High temperatures too for eastern Europe, but some thundery rain may break out for southern Poland and Slovakia. High pressure centred over eastern Scandinavia produces extensive sunshine for Norway, Sweden and Finland. Very warm again for southern Sweden, reaching 25C. Around 19C for southern Norway.

Wednesday
A thundery pattern exists again across southern Europe. Clusters of storms for southern Spain, although fewer than previous days. Portugal looks dry and warm. Fresher for northern Spain, but plenty of fair weather around Biscay. Thunderstorms will increasingly break out for southern France and the Alps, also Italy. Thundery too for the Balkan mountains and into mainland Greece. The Greek Islands should be dry.
Areas of thunderstorms will break out across eastern-central Europe for Germany, Czechia, Slovakia, Romania and parts of Hungary. Meanwhile northern France and the Low Countries will stay generally dry and warm, with variable cloud and some sun. High pressure lies over northern Russia, producing a waft of warm southerly air across much of Scandinavia, generating summer-like warmth. Chance of a little rain fringing into western Norway, otherwise lots of dry weather.
