Duty forecaster: Matthew Hugo
Plenty of sunshine for much of Europe, but with afternoon heavy and thundery showers remain a risk, especially through central and western Europe.
During Friday and high pressure continues to extend across much of the N Atlantic and eastwards into Norway, Sweden, Finland and also down towards Poland and surrounding countries. It is across these more northern areas of Europe where fine weather persists with warm spells of early summer sunshine. Atmospheric pressure will be lower still across more central and western areas of Europe with some heavy and thundery showers once again possible across parts of Germany, into France and perhaps more widely across the British Isles as well by this point. Some heavy and thundery showers may also extend down into Spain as well through the afternoon. Much of the Med, however, will maintain plenty of sunshine but scattered heavy afternoon downpours remain possible. Much of Europe will be warm or very warm, locally hot through the Med.
During Saturday and the risk of some heavy and thundery showers will continue, perhaps severe storms too through parts of Germany during the afternoon. The storms potentially less frequent than previous days across France and down into Iberia given a general rise in pressure here so fewer storms and with plenty of sunny spells and very warm. Similarly some showers are forecast across the UK but still with plenty of sunny spells too. Cooler and showery weather will replace the high pressure across Norway, Sweden and Finland through the day though, especially across more northern areas of these countries. High pressure will dominate across much of Eastern Europe mind with plenty of sunshine and high temperatures. Much of the Med will also experience high temperatures and sunshine, but some afternoon storms are possile across Italy and eastwards into Croatia, Serbia, Bulgaria and other surrounding countries.
