Drier north and south

Issued: 0530hrs Friday 26th June 2020
Duty forecaster: Alexi Venerus

Thundery showers continue to develop through into the weekend with quite widespread rain expected over central Europe on Saturday. High pressure remains over the far north and south of Europe where the sunniest conditions are forecast.

Friday
Largely dry and sunny across much of southern Europe, although do expect some cloudier skies across northern Spain and Portugal with some patchy, mostly light, rain. The Balearics, Sardinia and Siciliy are forecast to remain dry and fine with plenty of sunshine.
A front over northern and central France will push eastwards through the day bringing patchy spells of rain. Behind this front, however, some thundery downpours are forecast to develop later on in the day and overnight, these most likely across central, southern parts. Drier elsewhere over France. Elsewhere across central Europe, it looks to start largely dry and fine before showers develop in intensity through the morning giving some possible thundery outbreaks as the day progresses. Staying largely unsettled across eastern Europe as well as over Greece with the potential of some isolated showers developing over Turkey.
Weak high pressure sits across much of Scandinavia giving mostly dry conditions across Sweden, Norway and Norway, however with low pressure to the north, northern fringes of particularly Sweden and Finland will see cloudier skies and some patchy rain throughout the day.

Saturday
High pressure is expected to continue to ridge in from the Azores and will bring largely dry and fine conditions to Portugal and Spain, although cloudier skies still pose a threat to the most northern regions along with some patchy light rain. Mostly dry through the Balearics and Sardinia although cloudier than yesterday with the risk of an isolated shower possible across more nothern parts.
With high pressure over central Europe, albeit weak, Saturday will start largely dry, although showery outbreaks of rain are expected to develop as low pressure moves in. Rain heaviest across Germany, Denmark, Austria, Switzerland amnd over the far north of Italy as well as across Poland and other eastern countries. The rain looks to clear to the northeast overnight. Greece is likely to see some isolated showers but Turkey will be largely dry.
Generally dry and fine across much of Scandinavia, however, through the afternoon southern parts of Norway and Sweden will become cloudy with outbreaks of rain expected here.
