Issued: 0530hrs Friday 8th June 2018
Duty forecaster: Matthew Hugo
Rather varied weather across much of Europe, with hot and humid weather across the south, but rather cool and dry across the north.
Rather chilly weather, for the time of year, will continue across much of Norway, Sweden and Finland but with a lot of dry weather by this point, but with some particularly chilly nights, especially rurally. The remainder of Europe will see a summer-time mixture of sunshine but with heavy and thundery aftenroon showers once again developing, particularly across France, into Switzerland, down towards Italy and still into some central areas of Europe, including Belguim and Germany too. Low pressure is also forecast to develop more widely over Spain and Portugal bringing a particularly cool and unsettled period of weather here as well for the time of year. Some of the best conditions will be across more eastern areas of Europe and down towards Greece and Turkey, along with surrounding countries where plenty of sunshine is predicted where it will also be hot too.
Through into Saturday and, at the moment, high pressure will continue to remain slow moving across more northern areas of the UK and across towards Scandinavia, albeit with rather cool temperatures continuing here. The rest of mainland Europe will continue to be very warm, if not hot with sunshine and heavy, thundery afternoon showers. The primary exception to this will continue to be across Spain and Portugal where low pressure will maintain a risk of showers, but also with longer spells of rain and, importantly, a cool N or NW'ly wind is forecast as well with particularly cool temperatures here for the early part of June. Some of the hottest weather will be across Italy and surrounding countries, temperatures here in the low 30's and very humid. Equally, some of the afternoon storms across Italy and eastwards into Croatia and surrounding countries could be severe with torrential downpours and large hail.
