Turning cooler
Becoming unsettled

Issued: 0900 Monday 21st September 2020
Duty forecaster: Claire Darbinyan

Turning wet and windy, as well as cooler, from midweek

High pressure currently over the country is replaced by lower pressure moving in from the northwest to bring in cooler and more unsettled weather throughout. Fronts pass across the country bringing outbreaks of rain to most areas, this heaviest and most frequent to the west. Temperatures lower from the northwest through the start of the week with cooler air reaching all areas on Wednesday. Winds will be strong at times too with coastal gales at times to the east and south.

Thursday 24/09/20
Thursday sees one area of low pressure clear to the northeast of the UK while another moves in across Ireland, Wales and England. Bands of rain, these locally heavy at times, will sweep across parts of Ireland and the southern half of the UK. There will be some good spells of sunshine between showers. Cloudier with showers for Scotland, especially over northeastern areas and later, after the rain clears, for Northern Ireland and Ireland. A breezy day too, especially to the west and south, with cool temperatures spreading across the country. Highs at just 16C in the southeast and 11C further north.

Friday 25/09/20
Low pressure pushes offshore over the North Sea on Friday and in doing so winds veer round to the northwest and become brisk making the air feel even chillier. Showers ease over Ireland and western parts of the UK early on to leave a dry and mostly fine day here. Staying cloudier to the east with outbreaks of rain for eastern coastal regions of England. Strong winds, possibly gales, affect eastern parts of England too. High temperatures at a chilly 11 to 14C.

Saturday 26/09/20
High pressure over the British Isles brings a chilly but mostly dry and fine start to the weekend. Through the day high pressure is squeezed east as low pressure brings increasing cloud over Ireland, Northern Ireland, Scotland, Wales and far western parts of England with patchy, light outbreaks of rain for Ireland and Northern Ireland as well as far western parts of Wales and Scotland. Staying dry for much of England with the best of the sun over central and eastern areas. Highs at 10 to 15C.

Sunday 27/09/20
Pressure lowers across the UK and Ireland on Sunday as low pressure to the northwest of the British Isles sends a rain-bearing front across the country. A mostly cloudy day with outbreaks of rain sweeping from northwest to southeast. Brighter conditions follow from the west. Highs at 12 to 15C.

Monday 28/09/20
A westerly flow dominates into Monday with mixed conditions for the British Isles. Showers mainly affect western areas while some southern and eastern areas may stay dry. Highs ranging from 10C in the north and 14C in the south.

Tuesday 29/09/20
Pressure generally stays low and conditions remain mixed into Tuesday with showers and outbreaks of rain for the UK and Ireland. Outbreaks of rain for many with strong winds possible to the south. Highs range from 9 to 15C.
