Mixed, rain and showers and a risk of gales, few drier days

A mixed week ahead. There will be some wetter and windier days, but a few brighter days as well. Gales are likely for many, especially Scotland, although all areas will experience gales at some point during the week. A few milder days but cooler later.

Tuesday 17/12/24
Cloudy to start Tuesday for all areas. Rain and drizzle in the north and west with the most persistent rain in Ireland. This afternoon sees more rain and drizzle in western areas of England, Wales and Scotland with fog shrouding hills. Tending to be drier in eastern Scotland and eastern England, an odd spot of drizzle in the wind. Highs at 9 to 12C.

Low pressure affecting the country on Wednesday. This brings strong winds and periods of rain which are going to become more persistent and heavier during the day from the west. A risk of gales and highs at 11 to 14C.

Low pressure drifts across Scotland on Thursday. A windy day with severe gales. Heavy, frequent showers in the north and west. Drier south and east. Showers turning wintry over the hills of Scotland and northern England. A colder day at 5 to 8C.

A weak ridge of high pressure building bringing a bright day with sunny spells. Some cloud and rain into western Scotland and Ireland later as a front arrives from the Atlantic. Fresh northwest winds and highs at 5 to 8C.

Fronts bringing cloud, rain and strong winds to Scotland and Ireland as well as northwest England and north Wales on Saturday. Drier and brighter east and south. Highs 4 to 7C.

Sunday 22/12/24
Cool and breezy. Showers in Scotland, most north and west. Further showers western Wales and western Ireland. Eastern Ireland and much of central and eastern England will be dry and cool with sunny spells. Highs at 3 to 5C.
