Risk of gales in the north

A westerly weather pattern continues with generally mild air affecting Britain and Ireland, although northern areas will become chillier at times. Rain and low cloud most frequent in the northwest. Mainly dry toward the southeast.

Wednesday 26/1/22
High pressure stays to the south of Britain whilst an area of low pressure moves closer to northern Scotland with time and fronts drift in from the Atlantic. A dry day for most although patchy rain developing for western Scotland and northwest of Ireland, turning heavier here later in the day and advancing further south into the night. A few spots of rain during the day for western hills in England and Wales on a westerly breeze. Fairly mild overall, highs 7 to 10C.

Thursday 27/1/22
Cloud and patchy rain moves southeast across England and Wales in the morning associated with a weakening cold front, gradually clearing to see drier and brighter conditions develop from the northwest. Showers affecting north and west Scotland and blow across the Irish Sea likely on to northern and western coasts of Wales, but dry with sunny spells elsewhere. Brisk northwesterly winds, especially in the north and feeling cooler. Highs 5 to 9C.

Friday 28/1/22
High pressure drifts back across southern Britain, leading to another mainly dry day with variable cloud and sun. A west to southwest breeze affects northern areas, with drizzly rain moving into western Scotland. Windier later and a risk of rain becoming steadier in the northwest. Temperatures recovering again to be fairly mild for all, highs 7 to 10C.

Saturday 29/1/22
Strong westerly winds are likely to affect Britain and Ireland, but bringing very mild conditions for all. Cloudy skies for many, brighter toward the south and east. Rain and drizzle in the northwest, risk of heavier rain for western Scotland. Possible gales in the north. Highs 7 to 12C.

Sunday 30/1/22
Staying windy with rain at times in western areas, but very little toward the southeast. Northern areas may become cooler with some showers. Mild in the south. Highs between 5 and 11C.

Monday 31/1/22
Westerly winds are expected to prevail, with cool and showery conditions in the north, possible gales. Mild in the south and mainly dry for central and southern England and Wales.
