Issued: 0900hrs Tuesday 11th April 2017
Duty forecaster: Garry Nicholson

Driest toward the south-west

A fairly cool weather pattern influences the country over the Easter weekend and beyond. West to north-westerly winds will bring a mix of sunshine and showers. A risk of slight frosts overnight.

Good Friday 14/04/17
Low pressure passes north of Scotland. Fronts drift eastwards across Britain & Ireland, bringing areas of showers or some increasingly persistent rain, mainly in western areas. Patchy rain extends to Wales & the south-west through the day. Largely dry for central & south-eastern England. Rather cloudy for all; the best of any sunshine toward the south coast. A cool westerly breeze. Top temperatures 10 to 15C.

Saturday 15/04/17
Low pressure centred over the North Sea. A cold front passes south-eastwards leaving a showery north-westerly pattern across the country, some heavy bursts with possible hail, or snow over the Scottish mountains. Showers locally banding together for north-west England in the morning, then focused on eastern counties by afternoon. Few showers toward the south-west. Spells of sunshine. A cool breeze, highs 9 to 14C.

Easter Sunday 16/04/17
High pressure tries to build from the south-west. A small area of low pressure and associated fronts may bring a zone of showery rain to northern Britain, perhaps persistent rain to Scotland for a few hours, although detail uncertain. Plenty of dry weather for many places with sunshine - generally best in the south-west. A cool north-westerly breeze. A touch of frost at dawn. Highs 10 to 14C.

Monday 17/04/17
Confidence is lower by early next week: High pressure is expected to extend across southern Britain. Dry with sunshine for many. Risk of showers in the north & north-east. Starting chilly, with rural frost. A fresh feel during the day, highs 11 to 15C, warmest in the south.

Tuesday 18/04/17
Detail uncertain: Fronts moving in from the north-west bring a risk of frequent showery rain for Scotland. Scattered showers elsewhere, but many places should remain dry, probably best again toward the south-west. Starting cool. Highs 11 to 16C.

Wednesday 19/04/17
Low confidence: A cool and showery regime is likely as low pressure resides close to the country, probably centred toward the north-east. A chilly northerly flow. Some heavy bursts with hail. Sunny spells. Highs 9 to 14C.
