Often dry next week
Cool days, frosty nights

Issued: 1000hrs Wednesday 11th January 2017
Duty forecaster: Garry Nicholson

Cold may return from east later next week

A surge of cold Arctic air brings a risk of snow to many areas over the next few days. This weekend some further snow is possible, although temperatures will tend to rise from the south-west. Next week, high pressure becomes established across Britain, bringing dry and frosty weather. Cold easterly winds may develop later next week.

Saturday 14/01/17
A north-westerly breeze continues, although not as strong as previous days. Nevertheless, it will feel bitterly cold in exposure. A good amount of sunshine in central regions, and staying mainly dry. Areas of snow showers are likely to affect north Wales, possibly also the far south-west, which may turn to rain at low levels. Snow showers possible on some eastern coasts. Risk of ice. Top temperatures just 1 to 5C.

Sunday 15/01/17
Cold air remains in place across the British Isles, whilst fronts moving in from the Atlantic try to introduce milder air and precipitation. A complex mix of rain and snow - the snow most likely toward the north, and over higher ground, but some may fall and lie to lower levels. Temperatures are likely to rise to 7 or 8C in the south-west, but nearer 2 to 4C or below in the north & east.

Monday 16/01/17
High pressure extends across the country, with chilly conditions in many areas. Frost and ice likely to start the morning. A few wintry showers around coasts, but much of the country should stay dry and bright. Fairly light winds. Less cold than previous days for many, but the east may stay cold, highs 4 to 8C, locally milder in the far west & south-west.

Tuesday 17/01/17
Feeling cool in central & south-eastern Britain. Starting frosty, but a bright day is expected. Risk of fog patches. Daytime temperatures 3 to 6C in central areas. Small risk of light wintry showers near coasts. Milder with thicker cloud toward the far west & north-west, where some drizzly rain is possible, up to 7 to 10C.

Wednesday 18/01/17
High pressure centred across central & southern Britain maintains quiet weather, with frost and fog likely. Cloudy with drizzle or light rain in the far west & north-west. Some sunshine. Temperatures between 3 and 9C, mildest in far west.
