Week ahead - January 17, 2017
Cloudy & dry
Milder next week

Issued: 0800 Tuesday 17th January 2017
Duty forecaster: Simon Keeling

Dry with lots of cloud then turning more unsettled and milder next week

The quiet weather continues through the coming days as high pressure extends over the UK and Ireland. There will be a fair amount of cloud associated with the high pressure area although it should stay dry. It is going to turn slightly cooler as the overnight frost risk increases. Then becoming milder for all next week as southwest winds return.

Friday 20/1/17
Highs pressure is expected to be centred over the country on Friday. This brings more dry and quiet weather for all. Plenty of cloud floating around the high pressure area. There will be breaks in the cloud here and there allowing one or two bright spells to come through. Highs at 5 to 8C.

Saturday 21/1/17
High pressure stays to the east on Saturday. Skies probably become brighter with some spells of sunshine coming through. Cloudier skies to the south and east with bits of drizzle, although do note that it is difficult to predict where clouds are most likely to break. A cooler day for all with highs at 3 to 5C after morning frost.

Sunday 22/1/17
High pressure centred over the UK on Sunday. Fronts affecting western Ireland and northwest Scotland giving some cloud and drizzle here. Elsewhere it is going to be staying mostly dry with broken cloud and a few brighter spells. Tops at 4 to 5C but 7C in western Ireland and western Scotland.

Monday 23/1/17
Low pressure northwest of Scotland on Monday with a ridge of high pressure affecting the south. Fronts are going to try to pass east bringing cloud and rain through Ireland, Scotland and much of northern and western England and Wales. Drier in the east and south. Milder air arrives with the rain and the winds increase too. Highs at 4C in the southeast, 10C in the west.

Tuesday 24/1/17
A mild southwesterly flow over the UK and Ireland on Tuesday. This probably bringing periods of rain with it, most in the west and north of the UK. Tending to be drier further south although even here there could be some drizzle at times. Highs at 8 to 12C.

Wednesday 25/1/17
The brisk southwesterly flow is going to continue to affect the country through Wednesday. Rain and drizzle on western coasts and hills. Bits of drizzle elsewhere, but mostly dry. Lots of cloud for all. Feeling mild with temperatures at 9 to 12C.
