A wintry week
Sleet & snow

Issued: 0900 Monday 5th February 2018
Duty forecaster: Dr. Simon Keeling

Turning colder at the weekend and into next week with a risk of sleet and snow

Cold weather in the coming few days. There is a risk of some sleet and snow as fronts move in from the Atlantic. There are hints that conditions should become a little milder, albeit briefly at the weekend, although we return to chillier weather into next week. Note that there is much uncertainty in the detail of the forecast.

Thursday 8/2/18
Cold with broken cloud on Thursday in England and Wales as pressure remains fairly high. Cloud and rain will be moving into western Scotland and Ireland, this quickly turning to snow as it edges eastwards. The snow becoming heavier through the evening in central Scotland and parts of Northern and eastern Ireland. This then moves into northern England and Wales overnight, although is likely to become lighter. Highs at 1 to 3C.

Friday 9/2/18
A weak front is expected to be clearing eastern parts of England on Friday morning, taking any rain, sleet and snow with it. Following from the west will be drier and brighter weather, although some showers affecting more western coasts and hills. Another cold day at 2 to 4C for most.

Saturday 10/2/18
A widespread frost on Saturday morning thanks to a ridge of high pressure building through England and Wales. Increasing winds over Scotland and Ireland ahead of a frontal system moving in from the Atlantic. This will be bringing rain to the far west later with a risk of gales too. Highs at a slightly milder 4 to 5C.

Sunday 11/2/18
A further area of rain and sleet, associated with a front moving southeast will be affecting many central and southern areas on Sunday. This turns increasingly to rain as milder air arrives for a short time. Drier and brighter weather returns to the north and west for a time, although a further area of showery rain and sleet may affect western Scotland and Ireland later. Highs at a milder 8C in the south, 3C in northern Scotland.

Monday 12/2/18
A more west to southwest flow on Monday as pressure stays relatively high across the UK and Ireland. There will be some dry weather to the south and east, although northern and western areas may have an odd shower. Highs at 3 to 6C.

Tuesday 13/2/18
A ridge of higher pressure builds on Tuesday. This brings bright conditions with some sunny spells. Windier weather with rain affecting the west of Scotland and Ireland. highs at 3 to 5C.
