Starting cold with a risk of some wintry showers, although it may become milder from the west later
Cold weather around for much of this week. Low pressure is expected to pass eastwards through the country during the weekend, and into the North Sea. This drags in ever colder air from the north and pushes it southwards. The effect is that there will be plenty of showers around, these wintry at times and a few of them on the heavy side too. By the end of the forecast conditions could start to turn a little milder as the winds become more southwesterly and pressure builds.

Friday 5/12/08 Low pressure dominates the weather across the British Isles and Ireland today. It will be passing eastwards bringing plenty of showers with it, some of them heavy, mainly in the north and west. The showers increasingly turning to sleet and snow for high ground. Turning colder as the day progresses and the winds become more north to northwesterly. High temperatures at 3 to 7C.
Saturday 6/12/08 Low pressure is in the North Sea on Saturday with a northwesterly flow affecting all parts of the country. There will be some wintry showers, these heavy and persistent at times in the north and west. Eastern coasts could have some more persistent wintry showers as well. A cold day with temperatures at 1 to 5C.
Sunday 7/12/08 A ridge of high pressure starts to build in from the west for a time today. There will be further wintry showers around eastern areas, but for most other parts of the country the day should be dry and bright with some sunny spells. Thicker cloud and rain will be moving through Ireland and into western Scotland later. Temperatures a little milder in the west at 6C, but only 3C on eastern coasts.
Monday 8/12/08 High pressure tries to build into the country today, and this is likely to be bringing some milder conditions. It is likely to be dry with some sunny spells for many, although always the risk of some lower cloud and drizzle on western coasts. Thicker cloud and some rain could affect the far northwest of Scotland. Temperatures at 5 to 9C.
Tuesday 9/12/08 The threat of some cloud and rain affecting Scotland and Northern Ireland through the course of the day. Elsewhere it is going to be dry with some sunny spells, although western coasts are always at risk from some low cloud and mist on the coasts. Highs at 5 to 9C.
