RedCross: Appeals to help - Thursday, 05 Jul 2007 RedCross: Appeals to help South Asia flood victims GENEVA, July 4, 2007 (AFP) - The international Red Cross on Wednesday launched emergency appeals for some nine million dollars (seven million euros) to help flood victims in Pakistan and Bangladesh. The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) said it was seeking 8.5 million dollars to help the Pakistan Red Cross provide assistance to 98,000 people left in dire conditions in flood-stricken areas. Pakistani officials said on Monday that floods unleashed by a tropical cyclone and a week of torrential rain had killed 110 people and affected 1.5 million in the south of the country. Giant swathes of the normally desert southwestern province of Baluchistan remain under water following the impact of Cyclone Yemyin last Tuesday plus heavy monsoon rains over the weekend. "When you walk through areas of Baluchistan, the air smells of rotting goat carcasses and the heat is so stifling that many people are covering themselves in mud just to keep cool," said Asar ul Haq, the IFRC's head of disaster management in Pakistan. "We're expecting more rain in the coming days, which will heighten the risk of malaria, while we're also seeing new cases of diarrhoea," Haq added in a statement. The IFRC is also seeking 685,000 dollars for relief efforts in Bangladesh, to provide food, clothing, health care and shelter assistance to over 133,000 people for the next six months. More than 1.5 million people have been hit by storms, tornados and landslides in Bangladesh in the last month, the relief agency said. wtf/pac/ach |
