Austria: Snowfalls - Wednesday, 04 Jul 2007 Austria: Snowfalls Minus 4 C overnight VIENNA, July 4, 2007 (AFP) - Snow fell above 2,000 metres (6,600 feet) Wednesday in Carinthia, in southern Austria, following blazing temperatures earlier in the week, meteorologists said. The scenic Grossglockner High Alpine Road, which runs between 1,000 and 2,500 meters (3,280 and 8,202 feet) altitude, was closed to motorcycles, which are usually numerous at this time of year, while cars were required to put on snow chains. The mercury was expected to fall to between minus 4 and plus 4 degrees Celsius (24 to 39 degrees Fahrenheit) overnight in the mountains. Tourists who had traveled to Carinthia, a region well known for its lakes, also complained about the temperatures, which fell to 17 degrees after days of heat reaching 30 degrees. "We were looking forward to going swimming, we're not equipped for this weather," said Yolanda Wasing from the Netherlands, who has been coming to Woerthersee for years. "I've never seen such bad weather at this time of year." Temperatures are expected to remain low on Thursday but summer weather should be back on Friday, meteorologists said. Weather in Europe has been sharply divided in recent weeks, with a heatwave in the south and frequent rain and cool temperatures in the north. bur-gg/ssw/mb |
