China: Tornado - Wednesday, 04 Jul 2007 China: Tornado Tornado kills seven BEIJING, July 4, 2007 (AFP) - A tornado in eastern China has killed seven people and injured 93, state media reported Wednesday. The tornado, blowing winds of 100 kilometres (60 miles) per hour, destroyed more than 100 homes in Anhui Province on Tuesday, disaster relief authorities said, according to the Xinhua news agency. The bodies of seven people were found in the debris of collapsed buildings in Tianchang city, the provincial disaster relief office said. Relief teams have now been sent to the area, the report added. China has been struck by a series of natural disasters in recent weeks with 233 people killed by floods and 118,500 homes destroyed, while droughts in the north have left nearly 7.4 million people short of drinking water, Xinhua said. gn/kma/cc |
