Week ahead - May 16, 2012
Cool and damp
Better in the north

Issued: 0900hrs Wednesday 16th May 2012
Duty forecaster: Simon Keeling

The pressure pattern over the coming week shows low pressure to the south of the country and high pressure to the north. This results in a northeasterly airflow and periods of rain at times, mostly over England and eastern Wales. With the pressure being high to the north Scotland and Wales as well as Ireland will have drier weather, although even here there will be rain at times. Temperatures will be on the cool side at first due to the northeast wind, but then becoming milder in the south later.

Saturday 19/5/12
The area of low pressure is off the west coast of Cornwall on Saturday. An occluded front extends northeast from the low bringing cloud and outbreaks of rain across parts of west wales and northern England. A warm day through southern England with showers, some of them heavy, but some sunny spells too. Showers affecting central Scotland, but the far north should be staying dry. Highs at 19C in southern England, 8C in northern Scotland.

Sunday 20/5/12
Low pressure remains to the south of the country on Sunday with high pressure to the north. A northeasterly flow persists and a front will bring cloud and outbreaks of rain through Ireland and Scotland. Elsewhere it should be brighter, although with a fair amount of cloud and some showers. Highs at 9 to 14C.

Monday 21/5/12
Low pressure is again over the south of the country on Monday. This brings cloud and outbreaks of rain, most of it across eastern England. Scotland, west Wales and western England as well as Ireland should be drier with sunny spells. Highs at just 8C on eastern coasts, 15C in western areas.

Tuesday 22/5/12
Low pressure east of the country on Tuesday, and another area of low pressure developing to the west. For most of Ireland, Scotland, Wales and western England the day should be dry with sunny spells. To the east it will be cloudier with some outbreaks of rain and drizzle at times. Temperatures at 7 to 16C.

Wednesday 23/5/12
Periods of rain spreading north through Ireland, west Wales, west Scotland and western parts of England on Wednesday. Drier weather to the east with some sunny spells here. Highs at 9 to 17C.
