An unsettled outlook

Issued: 1000hrs Sunday 22nd April 2018
Duty forecaster: Garry Nicholson

Temperatures much cooler than recently

A fresh westerly pattern will influence Britain and Ireland this week, bringing a classic mix of sunshine and April showers. Detail is uncertain toward the weekend, but there is a risk of being broadly unsettled, with low pressure in charge producing some persistent rain.

Wednesday 25/04/18
Low pressure centred north-west of the British Isles. A showery day with some heavy bursts, particularly for Scotland and Ireland. Local hail and isolated thunder possible. Frequent showers too for north-west England and Wales. Showers breaking out for central regions too. Drier and brighter in the east and south-east, with periods of sunshine. A cool and brisk west to south-westerly breeze, gusty around showers. Temperatures 10 to 16C.

Thursday 26/04/18
A cool west to north-westerly flow influences the country, producing another day of sunny spells and beefy April showers. Hail and local thunder possible. Rain most frequent again in the west & north-west. Driest in the south and south-east. Pressure may build a little from the south-west later. Breezy, feeling cool. Highs 10 to 15C.

Friday 27/04/18
Staying mixed, with further showers, although may be more scattered. Lighter winds so showers would move around slowly. Sunny periods. Further rain may come back into the north-west as fronts return from the Atlantic later. Feeling fresh, but pleasant in the sun. Highs 11 to 16C.

Saturday 28/04/18
Confidence is low, but looking unsettled as low pressure drifts in from the west, bringing a risk of rain, mainly western Britain and Ireland, but may become more widespread. Feeling a touch warmer in the east. Highs 12 to 17C.

Sunday 29/04/18
Low pressure looks likely to be centred across central and southern Britain, generating a day of sunshine and slow-moving showers. A risk of more prolonged rain in some areas. Drier in the north. Highs 11 to 16C.

Monday 30/04/18
Staying unsettled with areas of rain or showers revolving slowly across the country. Perhaps drier toward Ireland and Scotland. Highs 10 to 15C.
